Activities of the IAGRG

IAGRG sponsors and supports three different types of meetings related to General Relativity, Gravitation and Cosmology. These are: An integral part of the Iagrg Meetings are the To encourage doctoral researchers, IAGRG has instituted the To accord recognition to young outstanding researchers, the IAGRG has newly instituted the
Over the years, IAGRG has sponsored various Publications , mostly but not exclusively, the proceedings of its meetings.

From time to time IAGRG also organizes some Topical Events.

IAGRG Meetings

IAGRG Meetings are mostly National level meetings which are organized approximately once in two years. These aim to provide a forum for the community to present their recent works as well as to promote interaction among the researchers. These are held approximately once in two years. Their format consists of a set of Plenary talks, sessions for presentations of contributed papers, the Vaidya Raychaudhuri Endowment Award Lecture. The General Body Meeting of the IAGRG is usually held at the end of the meeting. The meetings are typically for four days with about 70 or so participants from all over the country.

Vaidya Raychaudhuri Endowment Award Lectures

One of the events at the IAGRG meeting is the Vaidya Raychaudhuri Endowment Award Lecture. This event was instituted as a tribute to the two doyens of Indian relativists, P. C. Vaidya and A. K. Raychaudhuri. The award is given in recognition of the contributions made both in research and teaching of General Relativity and its applications to astrophysics and cosmology. The awardee is invited to deliver the Vaidya-Raychaudhuri Endowment Award Lecture at the IAGRG meeting. The lecture is generally meant to be accessible to the wider general relativity audience.

Since the 26th IAGRG Meeting in 2011, the Vaidya-Rauchaudhuri Endowment Award Lecture is held every year -- alternate years during the IAGRG meetings and between two IAGRG meetings at a venue decided at the IAGRG General Body Meeting. The Honorarium has also been revised from Rs 5000/- to Rs 10,000/- .

The first Vaidya-Raychaudhuri Endowment Award Lecture was delivered in the 15th IAGRG in 1989 and has been an integral part of the IAGRG meetings ever since.

V V Narlikar Best Thesis Award

At the 20th General Body Meeting of IAGRG, held on Jan. 20, 1999 at D.D.U. Gorakhpur University, it was suggested to institute a prize of Rs. 1000/- , to be given every three years, for the best PhD thesis accepted by universities in India, in GR and related areas. This was followed up by the Council which decided to arrange special sessions for PhD thesis presentations, during the future IAGRG Conferences, inviting the recipients of PhD degrees in Mathematics/Physics from universities in India, for their thesis in GR, Gravitation and Related areas, in periods of four years blocks. It was decided that the best thesis, selected by a panel of referees on the basis of quality and presentation, be given Best Thesis Award. Later the Council accepted the suggestion of Prof. P.C. Vaidya and decided to designate this award as Professor V.V. Narlikar Award for Best Thesis in GRG and Related Areas to be given in blocks of four years with the first award to be given beginning with the block 1997-2000. Finally, at the 22nd General Body Meeting, it was decided to keep Rs. 50,000/- in fixed deposit for this purpose. The first award was actually given for the Block 1997-2000.

At the 27th IAGRG GBM, it was decided to award the V. V. Narlikar Best Thesis Prize at every IAGRG meeting. Furthermore, the Prize money is also increased to Rs. 5000/-.

At the 28th IAGRG FBM, it was decided that if the Best Thesis Award is shared, then each of the awardee will receive the same Prize money of Rs. 5000/-.
